The UN in Libya reported Sunday that in June 2023, the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in collaboration with UN-Habitat, helped three municipalities in the Greater Tripoli area (Souq Al-Jumaa, Abu Salim and Central Tripoli) to launch a US$ 1 million, 30-month project to build capacity in plastic waste management.
The UN says this comes on the background of more than 85 percent of Libya’s population being concentrated in cities, specifically on the northern coastal strip. As a result, reducing the negative environmental impact per capita in cities is a major challenge and requires special attention to air quality and management of municipal and other wastes.
An entry point for recycling
The project, the UN explains, aims to make plastic waste management an entry point for recycling, reduce environmental pollution, create new job opportunities and encourage the adoption of circular business models in Libya.
