Turkish construction company Limak Holding Company has resumed work on the Benghazi Sports Stadium (formerly 28 March Stadium), the Benghazi Reconstruction and Stabilisation Committee announced. The stadium will be expanded to hold 40,000 instead of 28,000 spectators.

Speaking exclusively to Libya Herald regarding the resumption of maintenance work on the stadium, which has been suspended since 2011, the head of Benghazi Reconstruction and Stabilisation Committee, Hatem Al-Araibi, said that his committee has actually started field preparation work for the works site, which will be followed by completion work in the coming days by Turkish Company Limak.

Araibi indicated that the resumption of maintenance work will be in accordance with international specifications and standards and under the supervision of a specialized consulting office (Germany’s V-Consult).

Stadium will be ready within a year
He stressed that the Reconstruction and Stabilisation Committee will pay great attention to the implementation of maintenance works according to the schedule prepared for each stage. The stadium will be delivered within a year with all its various internal service facilities and the surrounding sites, he added.

Well-equipped and modern
The stadium will also be well equipped with various modern technologies, including high-speed internet and services, a television transmission in the centre, separate ambulance and treatment unit for players and the public, and surveillance cameras throughout the stadium and its surrounding sites.

Logistical preparations underway
Al-Araibi said that the logistical and technical preparations are well underway and will be completed within days, which target the administrative site, a residence for workers, and a site for the executive and construction works of the project.

It is worth noting that Limak Holding Company is a Turkish conglomerate with major interests in construction, energy, cement, and tourism. It won a joint venture worth 22 billion euros to establish an international airport in Istanbul, and in 2007 it won a 20-year concession to operate Istanbul Sabiha Airport. It has several other projects inside and outside Turkey that include towers, stadiums, bridges and dams.
