Malta’s Ambassador to Libya, Charles Saliba, yesterday confirmed on a social media post circulating news that Malta-based Libyan carrier, SkyMed, will launch flights between Tripoli’s Mitiga airport and Malta.

‘‘It is very encouraging to receive the news that Medsky will start operating between Tripoli and Malta with two flights a week, Thursday and Sunday. The first flight will be on February 2nd.

Our Embassy will continue to support initiatives that enhance the relationship between Malta and Libya’’, he concluded.

On its official website, MedSky was cryptic. It posted a photo of Tripoli from the air with the caption ‘‘Soon. The Medsky will take off soon from its new station. Where do you expect from?’’

MedSky has been operating flights from Misrata to Malta and back since May last year.

It will be recalled that there is still an EU flight ban on Libya preventing Libyan and European scheduled carriers to or from Libya from entering EU airspace.

Medavia and MedSky, both Malta-based, seem to have circumvented this ban by ostensibly operating charter flights.
