A delegation from Libya’s Rail Implementation Authority visited the InnoTrans 2022 expo in Berlin (20 to 22 September) in preparation for a workshop to be held in Tripoli soon on Libya’s railway system.
InnoTrans 2022 is the leading expo on railways. The delegation included Ibrek Gweder, Deputy Chairman of the Rail Implementation Authority and Osama Sadek, head of the workshop organising committee.
Sadek reported to Libya Herald that they had held fruitful meetings with several foreign entities, including Christian Chavanel, Vice President of the International Federation of Railways, who expressed his willingness to come to Libya and provide all technical support for its railway project.
The delegation also met with the Italian Railways Corporation, which expressed its willingness to cooperate with the Libyan Rail Implementation Authority in the field of technical support.
Libya’s rail construction frozen since 2011
The construction of Libya’s railway system, contracted with Russian and Chinese firms, had been halted by the country’s 2011 revolution. There have been many attempts and announcements to revive construction, but the country’s lack of security and financial settlements means no foreign contractors are ready to return.
