Libya’s Airports Authority (LAA) discussed the improvement of security at its airports with U.S company Culmen International in Tunis on Friday (5 March).
The meeting discussed [restrict paid=”true”] a mechanism to strengthen the procedures and measures of civil aviation security in Libyan airports by determining the training needs of the human cadres of each of the participating airports.
The various airport’s needs of devices, equipment and security systems necessary for operation, which will contribute to the application of internationally stipulated security standards, were also discussed.
The meeting included directors of Tripoli International, Benina, Sebha, Misrata and Mitiga airports. It comes within the programme of the US State Department’s support for the state of Libya during this stage.
U.S Government grant to Culmen
It will be recalled that the US Department of State, Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism, had awarded a contract to the US company, Culmen International, to provide security at, initially, three Libyan airports, Culmen had announced on 7 March 2019.
A leading provider of international security, logistics and technology solutions in over 100 countries on six continents, Culmen International had announced that it had been awarded a grant from the Department of State, Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism to implement the Libya Airport and Aviation Security Program.
The contract involves increasing Libyan airport security, its capacity to monitor terrorist threats, screen against terrorist transit, and develop standard operating procedures to mitigate such threats at, initially, three key airports through assessments, equipment procurement, training, and the development of a national aviation security strategy.
The Libyan Airports Authority had confirmed that initially the three “key” airports will be Mitiga, Tripoli International and Misrata airports. The implication being that other airports could be added. It confirmed that the project is entirely funded by the US grant. [/restrict]
