London, 27 February 2019:

Libya’s General Authority for Telecommunications and Informatics has granted permission to Libya Post to begin the completion of Libya’s Post /Zip Code address project, Libya Post reports.

Libya Post is one of the main state-owned telecoms and post subsiadaries charged with postal services.

A joint cooperation agreement between the two will focus on implementing projects for the post code address project.

This will include building applications for the project’s database management and establishing a public business platform to access the postal code interconnection, web applications, mobile applications and other services required by Libya Mail.

The start to a promising future for Libya’s postal services must be based on a scientifically studied methodology, as the traditional fields are no longer feasible in the light of the development of the systems in place and the transition to the application of the concept of e-government, Libya Post explained.

Libya Post said that over the past years, the Libyan state has witnessed a remarkable growth in population density, with cities and villages expanding rapidly, spreading far from the boundaries of the old areas of origin.

These areas have also undergone significant changes in land use, types of buildings, street patterns and property spaces. These call for the need to establish a system for naming streets and numbering property in both the big and small cities of Libya.

Different neighborhoods and streets of cities need to be easily identified and the which gives rise to an urgent need to establish a uniform naming and numbering system in all regions of Libya, Libya Post explained.

The modern naming and coding project is a gigantic project aimed at carrying out a broad and comprehensive field survey of an integrated mailing address system, building numbering and database construction, which is also aimed at establishing a locally and globally usable postal code infrastructure that can provide services for an advanced mailing system.

The purpose of the post code project is to find a mechanism for identifying or accessing postal addresses, consistent with the modern mail industry, by establishing a postal addresses infrastructure in Libya that is usable locally and internationally, Libya Post concluded.

It will be recalled that Libya’s post code system was commenced during the Qaddafi regime which had announced in the early 2000’s that the system was completed. Green post code lables began to be attached to many buildings in Tripoli at the time.
