On the eve of the Libyan National Army (LNA) assault on Waddan, Italian ambassador Giuseppe Perrone told House of Representatives (HoR) president Ageela Saleh that only negotiation could bring peace to Libya.
Perrone had arrived in Beida on Thursday evening. He said after his meeting with Saleh in the town that they were both working to bring the political process back centre stage. He added: “There is no place for a military solution in Libya”.
The Italian embassy in Tripoli has meanwhile denied reports of the withdrawal the 50-bed military field hospital that Rome sent to Misrata at the height of the Bunyan Marsous (BM) operation against the IS terrorist stronghold in Sirte.
The embassy said today that the field hospital was continuing its work providing care to Libyans in need. When the unit was set up as “Operation Ippocrate” in a tightly-guarded corner of Misrata airport last year, it was protected by a detail of 200 Italian troops. Seriously wounded fighters and civilians were flown out by C130-J hospital aircraft for treatment in Italy.
