Sabri “an environmental catastrophe” says Bukhamada

Tunis, 11 May 2017:

Benghazi’s conflict-ridden district of Sabri is an environmental disaster, the commander of the Saiqa Special forces, Wanis Bukhamada, has claimed.

With sewage flowing openly through the streets of the areas, mosquitoes, rats and stray dogs have become increasingly common, he said.

Images on social media show some areas heavily flooded. With the third anniversary of Khalifa Hafter’s Karam (Dignity) Operation next week, the Libyan National Army (LNA) has launched what it hopes will be the final offensive to to wrest control of Sabri from Islamist militants.

Whilst talking today at a conference in Benghazi Meical Centre to mark International Nurses Day tomorrow, Colonel Bukhamada said a solution was needed because the situation was “very, very serious”.

Now, more than ever, he said, was the time for doctors and nurses to stand with the LNA as they attempt to finally rid Benghazi of the Islamist militants still holed up in Sabri and Suq Al-Hout.

Bukhamada said he was concerned by reports that hospitals often had security issues and that workers had been assaulted.

Nonetheless, he praised the work of all of those in the health sector who supported the LNA and Operation Dignity.
