The Tripoli based Libyan Minister of Water Resources, Hosni Oweidan, held a meeting yesterday, at the Ministry’s Tripoli headquarters with a delegation from the British company Global Consolidated Contractors International Ltd (GCCI) to discuss cooperation in the assessment and development of dams in Libya. The meeting was attended by several directors of relevant offices and departments.
This meeting comes in implementation of the Prime Minister's directives regarding the assessment of the technical condition of existing dams, and within the framework of the Ministry of Water Resources' vision aimed at developing this vital sector and enhancing water security. It also aligns with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' efforts to open avenues of cooperation with specialized international companies.
Technical studies of existing dams
The meeting addressed the implementation of comprehensive technical studies of existing dams to assess their structural condition and determine their maintenance and development needs.
Studies for the construction of new dams
Additionally, the meeting discussed the preparation of preliminary studies for the construction of new dams at several proposed sites, in accordance with internationally recognized technical standards.
During the meeting, the Minister emphasized the importance of leveraging specialized international expertise to support the Ministry's plans for developing water infrastructure. He noted that the Ministry continues its coordination with several international companies in this field, in preparation for reviewing various proposals to achieve the best possible outcomes for the sector.
The company's delegation is scheduled to begin its first field visits today to the dams targeted for evaluation, as part of a work programme that includes several sites in various regions.
