Libya’s Tripoli based Ministry of Health celebrated today the successful conduct of a complex operation carried out on a baby at Tripoli’s Al-Hadba Al-Khadra General Hospital.
The Ministry said national medical staff successfully performed a delicate surgical procedure on a four-day-old infant at Al-Hadba Al-Khadra General Hospital in Tripoli.
The infant was suffering from a congenital malformation: a large bowel obstruction due to the absence of nerves in the colon.
A temporary sigmoid colostomy was performed to provide a safe passage for stool until the final corrective surgery, which will involve removing the affected section of the colon, can be performed.
The operation was successful, and the patient is currently receiving medical care in the neonatal intensive care unit, showing significant improvement in his condition.
Libyans still travel abroad for medical treatment
The significance of the announcement is that Libyan cadres are capable of conducting some of the most complex procedures in Libya, yet thousands of Libyans still travel abroad to seek health treatment in countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey – and Europe for the better off who can obtain visas.
