Libya’s proposed Science and Technology City can reduce oil dependence, create jobs for youth and support local innovation

Science and Technology City-Libya

The Media Office of Libya’s Science and Technology City announced last Tuesday (31 March) that the project was established by Cabinet Resolution No. 486 of 2021 as a financially and administratively independent scientific institution.

The city is to be established in the municipality of Swani Bin Adam, located about 30 kms southwest of the capital, Tripoli.

This national scientific project aims to support the fields of science and technology and transform the outputs of research centers, universities, technical colleges, and similar institutions into practical projects that serve development.

Objectives of the Science and Technology City
The project aims to bring about a qualitative leap in the field of science and technology in Libyan regions and cities. Its most prominent objectives include:

The City of Science and Technology represents:

1. A link between universities, research centers, the government, and the private sector.

2. A platform for transforming scientific research and studies into real economic projects.

3. An environment to encourage startups.

4. Part of the strategy for transitioning towards a knowledge economy.

Current Status:
The city is still in the activation and preparation phase.Meetings and plans are ongoing for its official launch and operation.Cooperation with government entities has been discussed to enhance its role in sustainable development.

If implemented effectively, the project can:

– Reduce dependence on oil.

– Create job opportunities for youth.

– Support local innovation.
