In a rare move of accepting their responsibility, late yesterday, the General Staff of the Libyan Army strongly condemned the armed clashes and acts of violence that erupted in the early hours yesterday, in the city of Janzour, west of the capital, Tripoli.
The clashes occurred over an internal squabble by two state-recognised armed groups. There were no fatalities or major injuries beyond some material damage and the fear spread amongst civilians caught in the crossfire.
A blatant violation of the law and military order
The General Staff’s statement read as follows:
‘‘While following these events with grave concern and regret, the General Staff affirms that what occurred constitutes a blatant violation of the law and military order, and a serious breach of the orders and instructions issued regarding the protection of civilians and the preservation of public and private property.
‘‘The General Staff emphasizes that all battalions and military units affiliated with, or directly subordinate to, the Western Coastal Military Region are fully committed to military laws and regulations and the chain of command and instructions.
Transgressions or violations are considered an individual act
‘‘Any transgression or violation is considered an individual act that does not represent the military institution, and those responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law and military regulations.
Based on its national responsibility to protect citizens and maintain security and stability, the General Staff announces the following:
– Its strong condemnation and absolute rejection of these hostile acts perpetrated by elements outside the law and order, affirming that what occurred does not reflect the values and discipline of the Libyan Army, nor does it represent the Western Coastal Military Region.
– Reassuring the residents of Janzour and all citizens that the regular forces tasked with maintaining security have begun their deployment and are establishing control on the ground to end any manifestations of tension, and that the General Staff will spare no effort in protecting the lives and property of citizens and preserving security and stability.’’
