Adopting Libya’s National Strategy for the Communications and Informatics Sector 2023-2027

The General Authority for Communications and Informatics (Logo GACI).

Libya’s Tripoli based General Authority for Communications and Informatics reported yesterday the official entry of Libya’s Root Servers into service through operating sites in the data centres of Al-Madar Al-Jadid Company in Tripoli and Benghazi.

Part of 2023-2027 Strategy
The Authority said this comes in implementation of the National Telecommunications and Informatics Strategy 2023–2027 and within the framework of integrated national efforts to develop digital infrastructure and enhance digital sovereignty in Libya.

Libya officially listed on global Root Server map
It reported that the servers have been officially listed on the global map of Root Server locations on the international website (root-servers.org), officially making Libya among the countries hosting this vital global internet infrastructure.

Strategic shift towards national internet independence
The Authority said this achievement represents a strategic shift towards national internet independence and improving its performance and quality by accelerating local internet response and reducing access time, enhancing cybersecurity, raising the level of national digital sovereignty, and ensuring the stability and independence of government and private sector service systems.

This achievement, it added, also integrates Libya’s position within the global internet system as an active contributor to its infrastructure.

Project pivotal step in consolidating Libyan digital sovereignty
The Authority said this project represents a pivotal step in consolidating Libyan digital sovereignty and embodying national integration between the public and private sectors and the technical community, with the goal of building a secure and advanced digital Libya that can confidently and competently keep pace with the global transformation.

Why are Root Servers critical?
It is important to note that root servers are deemed a critical part of internet infrastructure because they are the first step in the chain that translates a website name into a usable IP address. Without them, it would not be able to browse the web using easy-to-remember domain names.
