Posting on his X account last Thursday (15 May), Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba’s said ‘‘The path to building state institutions and halting the decade-long organized crime is not easy.
What we (his government forces) did in Abusleem (clashing with the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA) militia) was a necessary step to end a presence that had gone too far in violating the law and was linked to gross human rights violations.
The security operation was carried out in an organized and calm manner, without any confrontations. The next day, after the operation was fully completed, the capital witnessed unfortunate military incidents unrelated to the security operation. The relevant authorities dealt with them responsibly, to preserve stability.
I chose at the time to postpone explaining the details out of respect for the de-escalation efforts and to avoid any confusion or political exploitation. Now that the situation has stabilized, the time has come to speak the truth as it is, clearly, in a speech I will deliver in the coming days.
The process of state building continues, and the Libyans’ dream of justice and security is a pledge we carry on our shoulders’’.
