International humanitarian aid continues to arrive in Libya over 20 days after the 10 September Storm Daniel devastated Derna and to a lesser extent parts of the eastern region of Libya.
On 26 September the Canadian Embassy in Libya (relocated to Tunis) announced that, working with the Canadian Red Cross, humanitarian supplies from Canada’s stockpiles were sent to Libya as the country continues to deal with the devastating effects of the flooding. Blankets, hygiene kits and kitchen sets will be provided to those in need.
The Turkish embassy in Tripoli announced on 28 September ‘‘Our fourth aid plane just landed in Benghazi. Our specialist medical teams on the plane are on the way to join our desert hospitals and our active teams in Derna with humanitarian aid and medical supplies. We continue to work hand in hand with our Libyan brothers.’’
Meanwhile, on 1 October Qatar News Agency reported ‘‘The ninth and tenth planes arrived at Benina International Airport in Benghazi on Monday carrying 65 tons of humanitarian and relief assistance in an urgent response to the current humanitarian situation in Libya and to complete the Qatari airlift aimed at helping the brothers affected by floods and torrents east of the sisterly State of Libya.
The assistance included shelter essentials, food and relief items, as well as medical items provided by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), Qatar Red Crescent Society, Qatar Charity, alongside the Standing Committee for Rescue and Relief Operations and Humanitarian Aids for Areas Afflicted by Catastrophes in Brotherly and Friendly Countries.
The State of Qatar affirmed its full solidarity with the State of Libya and in standing with its brotherly people in facing the disaster of floods and torrents.’’
Finally, and also on 1 October, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society announced that ‘‘A Kuwaiti Air Force plane took off from Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base to Libya on Sunday (1 October), the tenth of the air bridge, to help those affected by Hurricane Daniel in Libya, carrying 20 tons of various relief and medical materials and an ambulance.’’
