Tripoli International Airport project expected to be ready by 2022: Italian ambassador

Tripoli International Airport is expected to be completed by Italian Aeneas consortium by 2022, Italian Ambassador to Tripoli Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi said yesterday.

Buccino statement was reported by Libya’s Economy Ministry after the Ambassador met with Mohamed Hwej, the Economy Minister in Tripoli.

Hwej discussed with Buccino the possibility of Italian companies returning to Libya to complete their contracted investment and the infrastructure projects.

The Minister praised the support of the foreign Ministers of Italy, Germany and France for his new Government of National Unity (GNU) and their eagerness to engage in a long-term partnership with the Libya, adding that the government is working to resume the implementation of investment projects and infrastructure by inviting the companies implementing them, including the international coastal road that extends along the Libyan coast by the implementing Italian company.

Hwej also expressed the Libyan state’s desire to strengthen cooperation with the State of Italy and to benefit from its experiences in developing the economy and trade sector to establish free zones and implement the international exhibition complex, which has an area of ​​more than 45 hectares. The Minister saw that this would represent a platform for communication between commercial activities through major conferences and exhibitions. He also highlighted need for support for the health sector and rehabilitating medical personnel.

For his part, the Italian ambassador was reported to have praised the efforts of the GNU in unifying state institutions, stressing the keenness of Italian companies to resume their work in Libya, complete stalled projects, and contribute to the implementation of new projects in the fields of construction and industry.

The Italian ambassador confirmed that Italian companies will start their work to complete the Tripoli airport project, which is expected to be ready during 2022, which would contribute to the return of international airlines to Libya.

He stated that the executing company of the international coastal road is keen to resume its work and implement the project as soon as possible. He also expressed the Italy’s willingness to convene the Joint Technical Committees to raise files of common interest.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Minister affirmed the Ministry’s keenness to facilities Italian companies’ resumption of their work in Libya and to contribute to holding Libyan-Italian economic activities and events to achieve common interests.
