Ahmed Maetig, member of Libya’s Presidency Council, called on the U.S. to pressure its Arab allies to refrain from intervening in Libyan affair, the Presidency Council reported yesterday.
Maetig made the call during an interview with Fox news on Saturday during his visit to Washington DC last week. He called on the US to pressure its allies into refraining from supporting the ‘‘aggression against Tripoli ‘’ by Khalifa Hafter, his Libyan National Army and allied forces that was launched on 4 April.
The Arab allies of the US that Maetig was referring to are Egypt, UAE and Saudi Arabia who, directly or indirectly are perceived as supporters of Khalifa Hafter.
Nevertheless, the Presidency Council report said, Maetig confirmed during his Washington visit the continued support of the US of the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).
Maetig’s report that the US or the State Department still officially supports Libya’s internationally recognized GNA contrasts with the alleged support by President Trump of Hafter and reflects the dichotomy in the position of the US on Libya.
It will be recalled that both sides in the Tripoli fighting have conducted visits to a number of foreign capitals in an effort to win international support. In May, the head of the Presidency Council, Faiez Serraj, conducted a major European tour which included Rome, Paris, Brussels and London.
