Former prime minister Ali Zeidan is reported to have been seized by gunmen today at a central Tripoli hotel.
It is being said that Zeidan was taken by members of Haytham Tajouri’s Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigade (TRB) from the Victoria Hotel in Khaled Ben Waled street, off Omar Mukhtar Street.
There are unconfirmed reports that the TRB was executing a warrant issued by the attorney general Sadiq Al-Sour. There has as yet been no reaction from the Presidency Council (PC).
After he was fired by the-then parliament, the General National Congress (GNC), in March 2014 Zeidan left for Germany. He returned to Libya on several ocassions, during one of which visits he claimed he was still prime minister.
This year he has been back again and told this newspaper that he had visited a number of towns and cities including Tobruk, Beida, Benghazi, Zintan, Sebha and Jufra.
It was after he had been in Sebha last month that a row broke out over claims that while in the town, he had called for the division of Libya. Zeidan denied vigorously that he had involved himself in any political programme or vision that touched on Libyan unity.
This is not the first time that Zeidan has been seized in an hotel. In October 2013 while he was still prime minister, he was abducted from his suite in Tripoli’s Corinthia Hotel and held for a few hours. After his release, apparently by angry locals where he was being held, Zeidan blamed his abduction on two GNC members for Zawia, Mustafa Treiki and Mohamed Al-Kilani. In 2014 Kilani was killed in fighting with Warshefana forces.
