Ajdabiya, 16 June 2017:
Two men were injured, one seriously, when an explosive device blew up in a car in Ajdabiya last night. The incident occured near the Aisha girls’ school in the town’s Fallujah district.
One of the injured is reported to be Makki Absit Al-Zwai, the brother of Mohamed Absit Al-Zwai, commander of the Libyan National Army’s 21st border guard brigade. His companion, named as Abdul Salam Al-Harak, is said to have been seriously wounded. Absit, a member of the brigade, sustained leg injuries. Both were taken to Benghazi for treatment.
According to a source in the town, the cause of the explosion was a bomb being placed underneath the vehicle.
Mohamed Absit, who was one of the LNA’s main commanders in the battle against Islamists in the town in 2015, himself survived an assassination attempt two years ago: gunmen sprayed his car with bullets, but he suffered only an injury to his hand.
Three months later, another brother who is also a member of the brigade, Omar, was abducted but then released by militants.
It is not known if last night’s incident was intended as a warning from militants to Mohamed.
