Tunis, 27 February 2017:
Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj is expected to arrive in Moscow within the next few days according to the Russian deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov.
“We would like Libya to end the protracted crisis as soon as possible and once again become a prosperous state with strong state institutions, a capable army and law enforcement agencies, and also restore its status as an important regional player,” said Bogdanov.
However, he also noted that little had changed since the December 2015 Skhirat Agreement. Whilst Russia welcomed the signing at the time, Bogdanov said the concern now was that the PC had “failed to start effective activities.”
The House of Representatives and the PC needed to end their political standoff Bogdanov insisted. For this reason, Russia would continue to support and engage with both sides.
Last week, Serraj said Russia had an important contribution to make and suggested Moscow could help arrange a meeting between him and Libyan National Army head Khalifa Hafter.
“We hope that Russia will play a positive role in resolving the Libyan crisis,” Serraj said.
