Tripoli, 21 December 2014:
Algerian authorities have arrested 12 suspected terrorists they believed are linked to the Islamic State (IS), whom they believe were . . .[restrict]attempting to travel to Syria.
It has been reported that the militants were active in the three Algerian provinces that border Tunisia and Libya, Constantine, Guelma and Al-Tarf. It is understood that eight of them are being held in Guelma.
The suspects are aged between 23 and 54 and include one woman less than 30 years. She was arrested as she was preparing to cross over from Algeria into Tunisia on her way to Turkey, where it is reported that her brother was waiting to travel on with her to Syria where they planned to join IS.
The Algerians have said that those detained were found in possession of terrorist literature, ammunition, weapons, communication devices and some cash.
According to Western intelligence reports, there are about 200 Algerians known to be active in the IS, which is significantly less than the number of Moroccans and Tunisians. [/restrict]
