Despite the political crisis, Libya’s beaches looked cleaner today after volunteers in coastal towns from Zuwara . . .[restrict]to Tobruk took part in a massive Coastal Cleanup Day event yesterday.
In Benghazi, children joined older volunteers to pick up garbage and debris on the city’s beaches. Members of the local branch of the Libyan Red Crescent joined in the efforts in Misrata. Residents of Tobruk, Sousa, Shahat, Beida, Sirte, Khoms, Tajoura, Tripoli, Zawia, Sabratha, Zuwara, Garabulli and Sorman also came out to participate in the cleanup of their cities’ beaches.
The Coastal Cleanup Day was organised by the Libyan Olympic Committee, with help from a diving centre in Benghazi. It was originally planned to happen last month.
Worldwide, 20 September was the date for the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual event promoted by the Ocean Conservancy to remove the litter that accumulates during the busy summer season, as well as to raise awareness about how garbage damages the world’s beaches and oceans.
