Paris, 14 October 2014:
Libya’s new foreign minister, Mohamed Al-Dairi, is due to hold talks in Paris today with . . .[restrict]US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Kerry had flown to Paris yesterday from Cairo where he had been attending the international conference to rebuild war-torn Gaza. While in the Egyptian capital he also held talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Sisi on both Libya and the fight against jihadist militants internationally. He also had talks with UN Secretary Genral Ban Ki-moon who had flown to Cairo from Tripoli.
Egypt’s and the US’s policies in Libya are very close. Both insist in supporting the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Thinni government in Beida. However, the US is supporting the Algerian mediation initiative while Egypt disapproves of it.
Kerry, who had talks with French president François Hollande yesterday on Libya among other issues.
Also in Paris is to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The main disciusion between them is to be the fighting in eastern Ukraine but Libya is also likely to be on th agenda. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Sunday that Moscow is in contact with both the HoR and the Thinni government, which it appointed and which he called “legitimate”, and with the Hassi “government”.
The latter was not legitimate he said, but the reality was that it existed. Russia kept contact with all bodies, he said.
