Benghazi, 18 September 2014:
The former head of the Libya Air Force, Brigadier-General Ahmed Habib Al-Mismari, was murdered last . . .[restrict]night in Benghazi. The assassination, which happened about 10pm outside his home in the city’s Hadaiq district, appears to have involved several killers. According to a source at the Benghazi Medical Centre, different types of bullets were found in his body. He died instantly.
Mismari was appointed head of the Air Force in January last year, replacing Brigadier-General Adam Saqr Geroushi, the present head of Operation Dignity Air Force, who had been disbarred by the Integrity Commission.
In March this year, Mismari, based in Benghazi, came out in support of Khalifa Hafter and was sacked by the then Chief of Staff, Major General Jadallah Al-Obeidi.
Also last night, a retired police colonel was shot dead at his farm in Umm Mabrouka in the city’s suburbs. Colonel Masoud Al-Oraibi is reported to have died instantly.
There was an attempt to assassination another a military official in the city about an hour after Mismari’s killing. Abdussalam Al-Hashani was shot several times in Fuwayhat district by gunmen who then fled. He is now in hospital in a critical condition.
In recent days there has been a fresh wave of assassinations and attempted assassinations in Benghazi which appear to have coincided with Ansar Al-Sharia’s failed bid to oust Saiqa Forces from Benina Airbase.
