London, 4 July 2014:

As part of its aim to upgrade the country’s aviation sector, members of the Libyan Civil . . .[restrict]Aviation Authority (LYCAA) are planning to attend this year’s Farnborough Airshow in the UK.

“We will be looking at new technologies that expedite easing air traffic issues in Libya, such as navigation aids, GPS systems and communication facilities,” Director General of the LYCAA Captain Nasereddin Shaebelain told the Libya Herald. “We need a complete IT solution here because the LYCAA has many sites in Libya and these need to be connected electronically.”

The aviation sector was neglected under the old regime, he said, leaving the country with poor communication systems and the whole aviation sector lagging behind with technology. “At the moment, if you are down in the south of the country, Tripoli cannot hear you, and vice versa,” Shaebelain said. “We need relay stations and improved infrastructure to enable better communications.”

The only impediment the LYCAA could face in getting to Farnborough Airshow is if there are difficulties with acquiring UK visas, with these apparently taking up to three weeks to process. Shaebelain said, however, that he was optimistic that these would be arranged in time.

The week-long Farnborough Airshow, which this year runs from 14 to 20 July, is a key event for both the aerospace and defence industries. Shaebelain said although he had not previously been to Farnborough, in the last two years the LYCAA had attended both the Paris and Dubai air shows. [/restrict]
