Benghazi, 30 June 2014:
Prominent Ansar Al-Sharia member Ali Al-Sanani has died in Benghazi . . .[restrict]Medical Centre (BMC) after he was shot while returning from dawn prayers yesterday.
One of Sanani’s Benghazi neighbours told the Libya Herald that the Ansar Al-Sharia member had been killed by gunmen who had waited for him at his apartment building in the city’s Istiqlal Street, formerly Jamal Abdul Nasser Street.
Sanani was taken to BMC in a critical condition. He later died there despite the efforts of hospital staff to revive him.
Another Benghazi local said the Ansar member had been a popular figure in the city despite his ties to the Islamist group. Sanani had appeared appeared on Al-Naba TV promoting Ansar Al-Sharia and saying he was proud to be counted amongst its members. He had been involved with Ansar’s humanitarian work rather than the military exercises for which it has become deeply unpopular.
