Tripoli, 21 July 2013:
Reports that Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie has escaped to Libya have been circulating on the internet . . .[restrict]but so far there is no confirmation.
Locally-based social networking sites have said that Badie, with the help of members of the Libyan Muslim Brotherhood, managed to enter the country last night through the main border post at Musaid. RPG missiles were apparently used to destroy the post.
A warrant was issued in Egypt for Badie’s arrest on 10 July, accusing him of inciting the killing of protestors during the country’s recent events.
“I can neither confirm nor deny these reports,” head of Congress’ National Security Committee, Abu Baker Rujbany, told the Libya Herald today. He too had read the reports circulating on Facebook, he said.
Rujbany said he had spoken to the Interior Minister, Mohamed Al-Sheikh, who, he said, had informed the National Security Committee that he did not have information about about what was happening at the border.
The Musaid border crossing at was closed on 4 July, following a previous attempt by Badie to flee to Libya, just one day after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi from power. Badie was reportedly arrested by the Egyptian army while being escorted towards the border by members of the Beduin Awlad Ali tribe. [/restrict]
