Tripoli, 5 February 2013:

Zliten is the latest town to tighten its security in the run-up to the anniversary of the 17 . . .[restrict]February Revolution and the uncertainty surrounding protest threats for 15 February.

The local council has established a joint security operation, which includes military authorities, to strengthen the policing of the town, according to Libyan News Agency LANA.

The council passed a resolution yesterday, Monday, that only authorised personnel will be allowed to carry weapons or ammunition, and only whilst on duty.

Gates and checkpoints will be set up across Zliten and these, along with mobile patrols, will be organised and manned by members of the joint security operation. The new security team has been instructed to take all necessary action, including the use of arms if unavoidable, to ensure the security of the town is maintained.

The new resolution also urged both government agencies and members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour that could threaten the town’s security. [/restrict]
