Benghazi, 23 July:

A 27 year-old man has been arrested in Benghazi on suspicion of murdering his two day-old daughter.

The charred remains . . .[restrict]of the child were found in the grounds of a local high-school several days after her murder, believed to have been on 8 July.

It is understood that the baby was born out of wedlock, and there have been suggestions that the man chose to rid himself of the girl as opposed to facing the consequences of his actions.

Having sexual relations outside of marriage is still a criminal offence that can carry a prison sentence in Libya, as well as being a matter of considerable social stigma. [/restrict]
