Shahat Ibrahim Hassan Awami was elected leader of Benghazi Local Council today. Faraj Mohammed Massoud Alabbar was . . .[restrict]chosen as deputy leader and Khaled Al-Jazwee the council’s spokesman.
All 41 members of the new council voted by secret ballot. There were a number of nominations for the post of council leader.
In the council elections on 19 May, Awami came third on the ballot in District 3 (Al-Sabri and Sidi Abaid).
The deputy leader, Alabber, was elected for District 9 (Buatni, Al-Huwari and Gwarsha).
Al-Jazwee, who topped the ballot in District 8 (Al-Qish and Al-Fuwaihat), is a doctor at Benghazi Medical Centre.
Shahat Ibrahim Hassan Awami, born in Benghazi in 1951 and with a degree in English, is a banker currently with the Wahda Bank as head of administration and real estate.
