Tripoli, 27 June 2015:

UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon today called on delegates to the Dialogue process to be constructive and flexible in the latest talks which, he said, should be the final ones.

“ Let us try to make it possible this week. Let us not wait for more time. What is possible now will be final solution, will be a solution that it will seem difficult in the short perspective but I am sure it will be the right one,” he said.

No final decision is, however, expected at the talks since approval has to come from the House of Representatives (HoR) and the General National Congress (GNC) rather than from their delegates. Those from the HoR were dispatched to Skhirat with nearly 50 amendments to the controversial Draft No 4, issued by Leon three weeks ago. Many f these are thought to be unacceptable to the GNC.

Nonetheless, sounding his usual upbeat self and declaring that he was sure that the talks would succeed, he urged both sides to help the process along by releasing prisoners during Ramadan and so “to send positive messages toward peace and reconciliation”.

All the delegates have now arrived in the Moroccan resort of Skhirat along with a host of foreign – almost entirely Western – ambassadors. [/restrict]
