Tunis, 28 May 2015:

UNSMIL will be hoping that with today’s  agreement between Misrata  and Taweghans, a piece of . . .[restrict]the draft Libyan Peace Accord will have been put in place.

Delegations from both towns met in Tunis and agreed to work on a settlement of the bitter differences that stem from the Revolution. Tawerghans were seen as Qaddafi loyalists who played a major role in the dictator’s attempt to retake Misrata in the longest and most bitter battle of the uprising.

With Qaddafi’s overthrow, Misratan militias sacked the nearby town of Tawergha, forcing its population into internal exile. They have remained displaced ever since living in squalid camps in Tripoli and Benghazi. A plan two years ago to return en masse was abandoned in the face of Misratan threats and the inability of the then Zeidan government to guarantee the Tawerghans’ security.

The precise details of today’s deal have not been revealed. However UNSMIL said that both sides had agreed to form a follow-up committee.  It will support the work of this body which had agreed to work “on the basis of international law and standards in order to achieve accountability, safe and voluntary return to Tawergha and reconciliation”

UNSMIL said that it also continued to call for the release of all those detained without legal basis.
