Tripoli, 22 May 2015:

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says it will have to provide food assistance for up to . . .[restrict]half of Libya’s internally displaced persons (IDPs), partnering with the Libyan Sheikh Tahir Azzawi Charity Organisation (STACO).

The WFP is currently providing food assistance for 51,000 IDPs in Wadi Shati, Misrata, Sebha and Traghen. Goods include pasta, couscous, rice and other items.

The UN estimates that some 500,000 Libyans are currently displaced within Libya because of the ongoing armed conflict. The WFP programme has seen ten truckloads of food transported from Tunisia into Libya and stored in STACO’s warehouse in western Libya. The food will be distributed to some 243,000 Libyans over the next six months.

WFP is also looking to partner with charities in eastern Libya and begin distributing food to those displaced in the region, especially Benghazi, in the coming days.

Since the beginning of the year WFP, has distributed food assistance to 75,000 in Libya, but had to suspend operations in March and April because funding dried up. The organisation estimates that it needs another 14 million dollars in funding to provide for Libya’s IDPs. [/restrict]
