Tripoli/Benghazi, 14 November 2014:

Libya Dawn has warned protestors planning to take part in demonstrations marking . . .[restrict]the anniversary of last year’s Gharghour attacks that they will take action against them.

In a statement published by the group’s information office, Libya Dawn said that it will deal with what it refers to as the “uprising of the 15th” using “all the power of God”.

On social media in recent weeks momentum has gathered for widespread demonstrations against the presence of the Misratan-led Libya Dawn coalition in Tripoli. The protests have been called for the first anniversary of the Gharghour massacre which left 43 dead and more than 460 injured.

The peaceful protestors were killed one year ago by some of the very same militias that make up Libya Dawn as they demonstrated against the presence of armed groups in the capital.

Referring to the plans for the demonstrations as “a plot” and those intending to take part as “infiltrators” and “terrorists” Libya Dawn has admitted to “tracking infiltrators and making daily arrests”. Residents in Tripoli have reported disappearances of some individuals in recent days particularly from Tripoli University. Many of those killed last year ago at Gharghour were students.

There has been growing unrest in Tripoli with Libya Dawn rule, particularly since the ruling  a week ago by the Supreme Court declaring the House of Representatives illegitimate. The demonstrations which have been most visible in the district of Fashloum have seen supporters of Libya Dawn firing on protestors.

The Tobruk Government has said it has been observing the events in Tripoli with concern. It has pledged its support for what it refers to as “popular, spontaneous demonstrations” in “support of the democratically-elected government”. It has described the response of Libya Dawn as “criminal”.
