Tripoli, 16 August 2014:
Royal Air Maroc (RAM), Morocco’s largest airline, has provided free extra capacity . . .[restrict]aboard its flights between Morocco and Tunisia to aid Moroccan nationals who have fled Libya.
RAM has set aside 360 free seats daily on its flights for Moroccans leaving Libya, the Moroccan news agency MAP reported. The airline already increased its flights between Tunisia and Morocco five days ago.
The increased capacity is part of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation’s efforts to provide voluntary repatriation arrangements to its citizens. At the beginning of this month it created a crisis management group to monitor the situation of Moroccan expats in Libya. The group is empowered to give emergency assistance.
At the end of last week the Moroccan Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane, said his government was taking action to help its 70,000 citizens still in Libya.
Though foreign nationals from neighbouring countries including Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco have left the country since clashes erupted in Tripoli just one month ago, it appears that a significant number has currently decided to stay put.
