London, 21 May 2014: Judges at the International Criminal Court in the Hague today rejected a final Libyan plea . . .[restrict]that Libya is able to give a fair trial to Saif Al-Islam, Qaddafi’s son and once heir apparent in Libya. After it issued arrest warrants for Saif and Abdullah Senussi in 2011, the ICC insisted that both men should be handed over to it for trial. The ICC accused them of war crimes and persecution. Libya later successfully persuaded the court that Senussi could receive a fair trial in Libya. It had been assumed in some government quarters that as a result, a final appeal against the court’s continued insistence that Saif be handed over, might also be successful. Saif , who is held in Zintan is currently on trial in Tripoli, where he appears via a video link. [/restrict]
