The Sand Dam, a 175 kilometre ditch and bank that surrounds Kufra is nearing completion.
It is . . .[restrict]claimed that that barrier will stop smugglers from entering the town, which has the authorities say has been used a staging post for human and drugs traffickers as well as the illegal shipment of commodities and fuel.
Even though the project is still incomplete, it is is being asserted that the Sand Dam has cut smuggling you as much as 95 percent. There are only two entrance through it, at the north and south of the town, both of which have security points.
With these two control points on a barrier that will be extremely difficult for vehicles to cross, it is expected that the job of controlling the area will be made a great deal easier. Militias will now mount regular patrols inside the barrier.
Some thirty percent of the work on the Sand Dam was done by local volunteers who participated at their own expense. The rest of the project was undertaken by local militias. It has been supported by Kufra council and the Arkan Deyar company.
