London, 26 February 2021:

At yesterday’s live press conference held by prime minister designate of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, the emblem and official name of the designated government were confirmed.

The new government will indeed be referred to as the ‘‘Government of National Unity (GNU)’’.

The name was included on the emblem in Arabic and English – to prevent confusion in translation. The Arabic can be – and has been – translated as the National Unity Government. The same confusion had happened with the National Transitional Council/Transitional National Council (NTC/TNC) back in 2011/2012.

Notably, the name of the new government was also included in Tamazight (Thamazighth, Tamasheq, Tamajaq, Tamahaq) the language of Libya’s Amazigh indigenous minority whose presence predated the Arabs in Libya. This sends a very inclusive signal by the GNU, and contrasts markedly with eastern administration and Khalifa Hafter who project an exclusivist policy towards the Amazigh.

An LD 5,000 public competition had been launched and won by the revealed design of the crest.

At the press conference, the GNU Media Department warned that it still has no official Facebook or Twitter accounts and that the ones up on line are fake pages. Libya Herald has urged the Media Department to report them to Facebook/Twitter.

They explained to Libya Herald that they plan to takeover the pages of the current and outgoing Faiez Serraj-led Presidency Council and Government of National Accord (GNA) – once they have been endorsed by parliament.
