Tunis, 4 August 2017:

Faiez Serraj was is to the Jebel Nafusa town of Kabaw yesterday for discussions with leading representatives of the Amazigh community on issues affecting them. He met mayors and councillors of Nalut, Kabaw, Zuwara, Jadu and Wazen. Also attending were the head of the Supreme Amazigh Council, as well as security and other local officials.

Serraj said that he had come to listen and that no community or group in Libya should be marginalised. All the Libyans were equal and the country’s cultural diversity enriched it.

For the councils’ part, the main issues they raised were not cultural or complaints about marginalisation but the need to complete the local water supply system and other projects that had been halted as well as issues relating to healthcare, education and transportation.

After the gathering Serraj met a delegation of Jebel Nafusa elders and dignitaries, members of civil society organisations and youth representatives.

The meeting with the mayors was organised following one in Tripoli earlier week with the mayor and councillors of the Amazigh town of Yefren.

It has not been reported if yesterday’s talks also covered the proposed constitution from the Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA) which Serraj has welcomed but which is rejected by the Amazigh. They boycotted the 2014 CDA elections and the Supreme Amazigh Council now says it intends to take the CDA to court over its issuing of the draft. It has also said it intends to draft a constitution for the country’s Amazigh areas.

We earlier said that the meeting took place in Nalut. It was in Kabaw.
