The Tripoli government reported today that Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba, held a meeting today with the Chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleiman, to discuss the electricity and fuel situation and the urgent measures being taken to address current bottlenecks and ensure stable supplies.
A summer of discontent
Aldabaiba is under enormous pressure following a summer of lengthy and persistent power cuts and blackouts, violent demonstrations, road closures and state building barricades by protestors, as a result of the power cuts, and armed drone attacks on state infrastructure. All these have led to calls for the PM’s resignation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister reviewed in detail the quantities of gas and liquid fuel supplied to power plants, consumption rates, and the plants' actual needs. He also reviewed the progress of fuel supply and distribution across various regions, emphasizing the necessity of daily and direct coordination between the NOC and the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) and the need for immediate action to address any shortages or emergencies affecting generation or distribution operations.
NOC committed to supplying all GECOL’s needs
The NOC Chairman affirmed the corporation's commitment to providing power plants with their gas and liquid fuel needs to the extent possible and to prioritizing GECOL's supplies to support the stability of power generation and the electrical grid.
Fuel supply situation for citizens reviewed
The meeting also reviewed the fuel supply situation for citizens. The NOC head confirmed the regularity of supply and distribution operations and the absence of any obstacles in providing the required quantities. He called for avoiding congestion at stations to ensure the smooth flow of distribution and the regular delivery of fuel to all areas.
Formation of a joint coordination room
The Prime Minister directed the formation of a joint coordination room comprising relevant authorities. This room will be responsible for the daily monitoring of fuel and gas quantities allocated to power generation plants, monitoring the needs of the electricity grid, and intervening immediately to address any bottlenecks. Periodic reports on the level of implementation and the results achieved will be submitted.
Electricity and fuel situation is a government priority
The Prime Minister emphasized that addressing the electricity and fuel situation is a government priority, and that monitoring will continue daily and meticulously until the measures taken are reflected in the stability of supplies, the improvement of grid performance, and a reduction in power outages.
