A delegation from the Tripoli based Libyan government held a meeting in Washington DC with officials from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a branch of the U.S. Department of the Interior, to follow up on previous meetings held in October 2025 and February 2026, and to discuss ways to expand strategic cooperation in the mining sector.
The meeting was attended by several senior U.S. officials, as well as the Libyan delegation, which included Minister of Transport, Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdel-Sadig, Minister of Economy, Suhail Abu Shiha, Head of the Executive Team for PM’s Initiatives and Strategic Projects, Mustafa Al-Mana, and Director General of the National Mining Corporation, Faraj Al-Shandouli.
Assessing Libya’s mineral resources, strategic and rare minerals
Discussions focused on activating the technical partnership between the National Mining Corporation and the USGS through the launch of advanced comprehensive geological survey programmes aimed at assessing Libya’s mineral resources, including strategic and rare minerals.
Mechanisms for developing Libya’s mining sector
The meeting also addressed mechanisms for developing the mining sector to become a key alternative economic pillar by improving the investment climate, enhancing the sector’s attractiveness to international companies, and increasing the added value of natural resources.
This move comes in the context of the Libyan government’s direction towards diversifying sources of income, reducing dependence on oil, and opening new avenues for international cooperation in economic and development fields.
