Customs Authority uncovers 11 companies involved in illicit use of Letters of Credit exceeding US$ 54 million

Misrata Free Zone Port Customs Centre reported last Wednesday (8 April) that iIn a qualitative operation reflecting the vigilance of customs men and their keenness to protect national security, the Head and members of the Misrata Free Zone Port Customs Centre were able to thwart an attempt to smuggle a massive shipment of psychotropic substances of the type Pregabalin — known among psychotropic substance dealers and users as “Lyrica,” which was hidden inside a 40-foot container coming from India.

It reported that this operation came based on accurate information received by the Head of the Centre, where the information was tracked and investigated with extreme accuracy until the moment of the container’s arrival.

Upon inspecting it, it was found that there were 300 cartons, each comprising 100 boxes, and inside each box were 10 strips, each strip containing 15 tablets, with a total of 4.5 million tablets. These are considered, the Customs Centre said, among the most dangerous and most widespread types of psychotropic substances.

The seizure operation took place under direct supervision and full coordination with each of the Head of the Misrata East Primary Prosecution, the Director of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Prosecution in East Misrata.

The case file will be referred after the termination of the preliminary investigation procedures to the competent Public Prosecution.
