Al-Bunyan Engineering Consulting Company reported last Monday (16 February) that over the past few months it had completed the first phase of a technical study assessing existing damage at the Zumurrud (Emerald) Shopping Mall Investment Project.

The project is part of the Tripoli Gate (Bab Trabulus) Project implemented by the Libyan Investment Development Company LIDCO located off the Airport Road area of Tripoli.

The mall, which spans 280,000 square meters, includes shops, cinemas, and other entertainment facilities. This study was commissioned by REC LIBYA JSC. Work on the project has been halted since 2011.

This study aims to rehabilitate and repair several damaged structural elements in the project’s concrete and steel structures. These elements have suffered damage over the years, including cuts to reinforcing steel, shrapnel, and the effects of fire and mechanical impacts resulting from a crane collapse on the site.

Methodology for assessing damage
Al-Bunyan said its consulting team adopted an engineering methodology that began with a field assessment, followed by comprehensive field and laboratory tests. These tests included examining and testing concrete samples, measuring the thickness of the concrete cover, and conducting tensile tests on the reinforcing steel. Other evaluation tests were conducted to ensure the structural integrity of the existing structure.

Second phase of technical study
Currently, our consulting team is working on the second phase of the technical study, and we will publish the results of the concrete slab load test in the coming weeks. This test required considerable time to prepare, conduct, and execute.

The management of Al-Bunyan Engineering Consulting Company extends its sincere thanks and deep gratitude to all those who made exceptional efforts and contributed their specialized expertise to the completion of this comprehensive technical study in all its intricate details.
