The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) reported that a specialized dialogue session entitled “Reengineering the Energy Landscape in Libya” was held last Tuesday (9 December) on the sidelines of the PowerElec 2025 Exhibition, held at the Tripoli International Fairgrounds from 8 to 11 December.
REAoL reported that a group of specialists, experts and representatives of active institutions in the energy sector participated in the event.
The session was attended by Nasreddin Mohamed Al-Barqli, a member of the Board of REAoL, a number of directors of departments, offices and engineers from the REAoL, representatives of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), the Libyan Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies, in addition to the participation of an academic from the Faculty of Renewable Energies – Tajoura, and a representative of the private sector.
Analysing the current reality of the energy system in Libya
The session analysed the current reality of the energy system in Libya and reviewed the most important technical and economic challenges facing the sector, especially with regard to the reliability of the electrical grid, the expansion of the use of renewable energy sources, and the role of innovation in improving efficiency.
Promising opportunities for solar and wind energy in Libya
Participants also discussed the promising opportunities for solar and wind energy in Libya, and ways to strengthen partnerships between research institutions and the public and private sectors, to support the transition towards sustainable energy and achieve long-term energy security.
REAoL’s vision on clean energy production
During his intervention, Nasreddin Al-Barqali presented REAoL’s vision on clean energy production projects, stressing the importance of accelerating the pace of implementation of national projects and enhancing institutional cooperation to build an integrated and modern energy system.
The session concluded with several practical recommendations, most notably:
- The need to launch national programmes to qualify cadres.
- The need to update legislation supporting renewable energy.
- Develop a clear roadmap for energy transition in Libya in coordination between the concerned authorities.
