‎The Attorney General’s Office reported Monday (18 August) that it had ordered the arrest of seven expatriates who were found in possession of 15,000 litres of fuel in 11 different sites.

These commercial quantities of fuel are subsidised by the state and are meant for use by consumers and not to be traded commercially let alone sold on the black-market.

It said the fuel was to be sold illegally in the northwestern municipalities of Zuwara and Ziltan.

The Attorney General’s Office said the ‎‎rest of those involved in the management of these sites will be prosecuted‎‎.‎

The arrests are part of an intensive and wide effort by the authorities to fight fuel smuggling in western Libya which was brought into focus by last week’s fuel shortage crisis. The government claims fuel imports and supplies are adequate but that the shortage is caused by fuel smugglers.
