The Attorney General’s Office reported yesterday that the Public Prosecution has ordered the detention of eighteen defendants involved in fuel smuggling gangs to neighbouring countries.
It reported that eighteen defendants were caught red-handed in possession of 170,000 litres of diesel fuel, prepared to be smuggled across the country’s southeastern border.
The accused had repeatedly used diesel fuel supply requests falsely attributed to the Kufra Agricultural Project. Libyan Oil Company distribution officials were also found to have abused their position by deliberately withholding the quantities of diesel fuel allocated to some distribution entities and allocating them to other entities in violation of fuel distribution regulations.
Thirteen fuel distribution stations were also visited showing the refusal of some petrol station officials to market the quantity of diesel fuel allocated to the population without legitimate justification.
The eighteen accused were detained pending investigation. Seized quantities of fuel, eleven trucks, and sixteen trailers used by the accused to smuggle fuel out of the country were also seized.
