Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, met on Tuesday with the European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, to discuss several issues of mutual interest, most notably the recent economic developments in the country and their direct impact on Libyan citizens’ livelihoods.
Uncontrolled parallel spending
During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasised that the decline in the value of the Libyan dinar, as a result of parallel and uncontrolled spending (by the eastern based administration), represents one of the most prominent economic challenges facing the country.
Call for international stance
He called for the need to adopt a unified and declared international position that criminalises this type of spending, which occurs outside legal frameworks and imposes its burdens on Libyan citizens.
Illegal migration
Regarding the issue of illegal immigration, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s clear vision that Libya will not be a home for illegal immigrants. He pointed to the importance of working together on plans to deport migrants to their countries of origin, in accordance with the principles of respect for sovereignty and humanitarian standards.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation between Libya and the European Union in a number of economic, security, and development fields, to serve the interests of both sides and enhance stability in Libya and the region.
