Benghazi’s Jiliana Free Zone continues to operate transit cargo convoys to Chad, the Libyan state news agency, LANA, reported Tuesday (13 August). A convoy set off to Chad last Tuesday through the Al-Jowfe Free Zone in the southern city of Kufra secured by the eastern based armed forces.
The transit convoy is organised by Al-Watan Company for Shipping Agencies in cooperation with the World Food Organization (FAO) and is the tenth convoy to be processed and transported through the Benghazi port.
The convoy consists of 13 trucks carrying 23 containers with various goods, most of which are foodstuffs and equipped with fuel tanks. It is accompanied by officers from the customs department, and the convoy’s journey takes two weeks
Competition is intense between the port of Benghazi and the port of Douala in Cameroon to run transit cargo convoys to landlocked countries such as Chad and South Sudan, Al-Watan Company for Shipping Agencies said.
Al-Watan Company for Shipping Agencies, which launched its convoys in September 2023, says it aims to ship a thousand containers per month, and currently has 200 containers loaded with flour, which it is working to export to Chad.
