Speaking at the Libya-Italy Business and Investment Forum held in the Misrata Free Zone yesterday, Libya’s Tripoli based Minister of Transport, Mohamed Shahoubi, stressed the importance of transit trade to Libya as a form of economic diversification away from hydrocarbons.

Specifically, he stressed the importance of Libya’s Transit Trade Corridors / Roads linking the country’s mediterranean free ports and zones including Misrata Free Zone, Sirte Free Zone, Benghazi’s Julyana free zone, and others, to the southern borders.

‘‘Developing the Southern Road is a strategic economic priority aimed at establishing a safe and efficient trade corridor linking Libya with countries in the African hinterland, particularly Chad, Niger and Mali.

(Libya’s Transit Corridors) will also create greater opportunities to leverage Libyan ports and logistics zones to receive goods and redistribute them to African markets’’, he emphasised.
