UNSMIL: Warring parties invited to begin negotiations on 29 September

After his arrival in Tripoli on Friday, the new UNSMIL head Abdoulaye Bathily conducted round robin meetings with the Tripoli-based and incumbent caretaker prime minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba and Presidency Council head Mohamed Menfi Sunday.

On Monday, he met House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh.

UNSMIL reported that Aldabaiba welcomed Bathily into the country and offered to extend his government’s support to his good offices. It will be recalled the Aldabaiba government had initially objected to Bathily’s appointment, wanting an American or European who would carry more clout in the UN.

UNSMIL reported that they exchanged views on the situation in Libya and Aldabaiba shared his analysis of options to advance peace and stability in the country.

Menfi also welcome Bathily who in turn. stressed that the solution to the Libyan crisis should come from the Libyans themselves.

Bathily emphasized that he would engage with all Libyan constituents, including women and the youth, across the country to hear their views on bringing peace and stability back to Libya.

At today’s meeting in Gubba with HoR Speaker Saleh UNSMIL reported that the two discussed options to address the political situation. Bathily underlined the criticality of Libyan leadership in establishing a consensual path to peace and stability.
